My Favorite Projects of 2018

Hello Friends!

I can’t believe Christmas has come and gone! We enjoyed a perfect mix of socializing with friends and family and then hibernating on the couch watching Christmas movies!

It’s that time when the new year is fast approaching, and for me it is a time of both reflection and anticipation. While I am actually not a big fan of New Year’s Eve, the 1st day of the new year always makes me excited about a new year and a clean slate. When I look back on 2018, one of the biggest things that stands out for me is finding my groove with this blog. I have been consistently posting at least once a week for a year now, and I am so enjoying it! From the styling to the photography to the writing…I love it all.

If you have been following along with me over this past year, thank you so much and I appreciate you taking time out of your busy life and reading! If you are new here, welcome! My goal with this blog is to share inspiration and ideas with you. Today I want to share my top 5 favorite blog posts that I published in 2018. It’s been fun for me to look back on what I have accomplished and how much I have learned about blogging. So here we go, Little Nest Design, Best of 2018

1. Liatorp Bookcases

Our family room off the kitchen is a really small space and since we moved in, has always felt a little awkward to decorate. I have switched things up many times over the 6 years that we have lived here. This is how it looked when we first moved in…

I was craving built ins really badly but knew that they were never going to be in our budget.  I decided to put these bookcases on either side of our fireplace to create “the look for less” and I am in love with them! You can read more about that by clicking here.

These bookcases are functional because they hold our TV and provide toy storage…

but they are also decorative and give me lots of styling options!

I am so happy I decided to install these bookcases in our family room, I think they really compliment the space and are super functional. Plus they were seriously cost effective so that is a win win in my books!

2. Why I Love Throw Pillows

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am obsessed with throw pillows. So much so, that I sell handmade throw pillow covers in my Etsy Shop, Little Nest Home Decor. I have written several posts about throw pillows, but this is by far the best one in my opinion.

I won’t re-hash the whole post, if you want to read it, you can click here. Instead I will just share some photos of my favorite pillows I have created so far! This fabric was what motivated me to start making pillows to sell…I think it is so beautiful! I special ordered it from Spoonflower and it is a painting that was printed onto fabric.

I got really inspired in the Fall by some tablecloths I saw at Homesense which prompted this collection…

The orange plaid stole my heart and looked so good with my Fall decor!

I also created a Christmas throw pillow collection, and my favorite one was again inspired by a tablecloth from Homesense!

I have lots of fabric in my stash and I hope to find some time to sew some new additions to my Etsy shop over the next few weeks!

3. Outdoor Living Space

At the beginning of the summer we gave our backyard a complete overhaul and improved it so much. You can read the full story by clicking here. The best thing that came of this is that we gained some extra space outside. After extending the concrete patio, we now have enough room for an eating area under the glass overhang:

I love this dining table and the matching benches we bought from World Market.

And in the far corner of the patio, we have a little sitting area, which is the perfect spot to curl up with a book or visit with friends over a cocktail!

Can’t wait for Spring and Summer when we can enjoy this outdoor space again!

4. Pantry Cupboard

Back in September, I made some time to tackle our big pantry cupboard which had become an unruly black hole of stale crackers stacked on top of oversize appliances mixed in with canned goods we were never going to eat!

Organizing this space was the project that I have appreciated the most, and if you missed it, you can read all the details by clicking here. Not a day goes by that I don’t open this cupboard and feel grateful that I invested the time and money into making it as functional as possible!

I still love the clear plastic OXO pop top canisters that I bought for our dry goods. Writing on them with paint pen was a good practice of my new mantra “better done than perfect”. I really dislike the look of my own printing, and my tendency is to try and come up with some pretty labeling system. However, this time around, I stayed focused on the point of the project, which was to increase the functionality of the cupboard…not to submit photos to Martha Stewart Magazine! (but that would be dreamy!)

I already had my baking supplies in these clear plastic containers from Rubbermaid, and I couldn’t justify buying new ones just to make things look consistent, so I stuck with them. They function just fine for us, and again, I was so appreciative of this system over the holiday season, with all the baking we were doing!

5. Entryway Makeover

I was really excited about completing our entryway makeover project because it was something I had been wanting to do forever, but couldn’t seem to find the time.

Much like with adding the bookcases to our Family Room, painting our front door black has made a major impact on our decor for very little money.

I started off by painting the outside of the front door…I was tired of the Cranberry Color and was looking for something more inline with my modern farmhouse vibe! Here is the before:

And then the After:

It took me awhile to get around to completing the inside, but when I finally set aside a day to paint…it was so gratifying! Here is the before:

And the after:

It’s so nice to review all the progress we have made in our home. I have lots of other decorating and design projects planned for 2019, and I can’t wait to get started with them! There is just something about the new year and the anticipation of the possibility of what’s to come! I think first up will be the long-anticipated room make-over for my middle daughter. It is her birthday the 5th of January and I think this will be part of our gift to her.

Do you have any house projects in the plans for 2019? I would love to hear from you! If saw anything in this post that inspired you, make sure you Pin it for later! And speaking of Pinterest, I have been pinning lots of beautiful images lately as I gather ideas for the projects floating around in my brain!
