Christmas Traditions

Well, Christmas day is only 3 sleeps away! As is always the way, December has been a bit of a blur! I think my favorite thing about the holiday season are the traditions that we carry out from year to year.

It’s these things that color our memories and make each of our families unique. So many of our traditions are just little things, but they mean a great deal to my family and I. Giving and receiving gifts on Christmas Day itself is fun of course, but for me the spirit of the season is the love and joy that becomes the focus of all things for the month of December. I know it sounds cheezy but it really does make my heart feel warm and fuzzy!

Today I thought I would share some of my favorite Christmas Traditions with you! So here we go, in no particular order.

1.Giving the kids new ornaments and decorating their special tree

Every year I buy each of the kids a new tree ornament, and I write their name and the year on it. This year I gave them each one of these funky little Lamas and wrote them a message reminding them of how they camped on a farm with Alpacas this summer.

2.Baking gingerbread men and ninjabread men as a family

When Kallum was in grade 1, I found these cute ninja cookie cutters and it inspired a tradition that’s still going strong today. We make gingerbread cookies and take them into the kids school for them to have a cookie decorating party with their classmates. We do lots of different shapes but the ninja bread men are my favorite!

3.Watching Elf

This is our family’s favorite Christmas movie and we have made watching it into a ritual! We order pizza, I get the kids new Christmas jammies from Old Navy and we cozy up all together. I look forward to this all year! This movie also inspired these DIY wall hangings I made this year.

4.listening to Christmas music on repeat

Starting in mid-November, it’s all Christmas music, all the time for this lady. I just can’t get enough!

5.Making my mom’s whipped shortbread with my sister

My sister and I love to bake whipped shortbread using my mom’s recipe. We have had some cookie fails over the years, but spending time with this girl creating something that reminds us of our childhood Christmases is pretty special!

6. Snowy our Elf on the Shelf

You never know where you are going to find this little rascal hiding out. He has been bringing Christmas magic to our house for 6 or 7 years now!

7. Advent calendars

We love to count down the sleeps until Christmas around these parts! Over the years the kids have had lego and playmobil advent calendars, but this year only Stella had a toy one. The other two are not into those toys anymore, sadly.

8. Sending out Christmas cards

Every year I love to make a picture collage of the kids and give them to friends near and far. I keep a few for us every year and I have quite the collection now!

And on that note, I want to thank you so much for reading this post and wish you a very Happy Holiday Season, from my family to yours!

xo, Kerri
