Hello friends, can you believe it's December already? November just flew by, and now its time to hold on to the seat of your pants as December, aka the busiest month of the year, is upon us!
This blog post was a little delayed, I meant to post it last week but life just got in the way! This past week ended up being a real doozy. My youngest had to go under general anesthetic to have dental work done and it ended up being harder on her than I ever imagined. The poor kid, when she was younger she had many many ear infections and took lots of antibiotics. No one told me at the time that this is very damaging to her permanent teeth that may be developing at that time. Not that there was anything that could have been done about it at the time. Although looking back, I think that a lot of her ear infections and bacterial infections were directly related to food intolerance, but that is a story for another day. Stella's 6-year molars were in really bad shape and the plan was to put crowns on them. It turns out one tooth couldn't be saved and they had to pull it. Look at the size of this thing!
Being put under anesthetic for an hour and a half combined with loosing a giant molar took a very big toll and my poor baby was seriously down and out. I had to carry her in from the car and she just wanted to go right into my bed, jacket and all.
She was sick to her stomach, couldn't eat, was super lethargic and then developed a fever. She missed 3 days of school in total but was finally feeling better by thursday. What a relief! It is so hard seeing your babies in pain and feeling sick.
On Monday night when Stella was feeling particularly terrible, I was working on my laptop in my bed beside her, along with nurse Lucy. I didn't realize that this was not good for my laptop, and it fizzled out on me the next morning. What I learned from the laptop repair place is that having your laptop on a soft surface basically suffocates it - the fan was blocked and so then it overheated and broke. #oops. So I had a sick kid at home and a busted laptop, not so good for the ole' productivity!
Anyway, despite all of these challenges, I am finally ready to share volume 2 of "what I'm loving lately" so here goes! As I was writing this post, a definite theme was emerging. If you follow me on instagram, you may have seen the flannel pillow covers I was sewing for an upcoming Christmas market.
I had to laugh as I was sewing them because I realized that I was also wearing a flannel shirt that day. Not only that, I had worn flannel jammies to bed the night before, and slept on sheets made of...can you guess? FLANNEL! Oh my goodness, my commitment to this fabric as of late has been truly remarkable!
Its been so cold and damp in Vancouver (shocker) that it's no wonder I have been reaching for this cozy fabric on repeat. Add in some polar fleece and I am good to go! Anyway, the theme of today friends is flannel!
For the Home
First up, I have to rave about these sheets I purchased from Target a few weeks back. I had bought some adorable ones for my girls from the Target Pillowfort line, and then on my next visit had to pick up some for Kallum, Steve and I.
The lumberjack pattern just killed me! Thank goodness Kallum was okay with having these on his bed....cause really he didn't have a choice!
I love the way my flannel sheets look on my bed, stripes are my all-time favorite pattern, especially black or grey stripes.
I love the look of a stripe against a floral print. This combination works great with throw pillows too.
What is even better than the way they look is the way they feel. The first week we had these on, I was almost giddy when I would climb into bed at night.
They are so soft and cozy, it's almost too good! They are also Lucy approved:
They are definitely warmer than regular sheets, so I have to sleep with the window open a crack but I love that anyway...cool air while tucked into a warm bed? Yes please!
It looks like these particular flannels sheets from Target are only available in store, but I found a similar pair on Amazon that look just as cozy!
For the kids
For a few weeks now, I have been noticing that retailers have been putting out toy catalogues in preparation for the Christmas season. When I was a kid, the Sears wishbook would get delivered to our house in November and I would pour through that thing like it was my J-O-B! I have such fond memories of that and it seems that my kids are no different, well the girls anyway. On my travels, I have collected catalogues for them from American Girl, Playmobil, Target; but the best one is from Indigo/Chapters, which is the Canadian Equivalent to Barnes and Noble.
What I love about the Indigo catalog was that it came with these cute stickers.
The stickers turned this catalog into an activity book, and my girls had a great time pouring through and making note of what they wanted for Christmas.
After they spent a considerable amount of time looks through catalogs, they got busy making their lists and checking them twice!
Once they had taken a thorough pass through all the catalogs, it was time to write a letter to the Big Guy! We will be getting these in the mail this week, and will anxiously await his reply! Did you know that if you get your letter to Santa in the mail before December 11th he will write you back!?Just in case you need his contact information, you can click this link to get the details!
I am sure that Santa is happy to have these letters in such a timely fashion so he can have lots of time to make the toys, or shop for the ones that the Elves aren't too sure about.
I am so thankful for the inspiration that these catalogs provided and that we have this very special item checked off of our to-do list!
Now onto the next catagory and one of my favorites, what clothes I am loving this week! First up, I have to share the 411 on these amazing fleece lined leggings. I was chatting with a random stranger one day, when it was particularly cold and rainy outside. It had come up in conversation that I was looking for some polar fleece pants to wear when I am watching my girls play soccer (brrrrr!). She told me about these amazing leggings from a local store called "The Latest Scoop".
She had me at Polar fleece-lined leggings, but when she told me they were $15 a pair, I immediately diverted my family and went to check out the West Vancouver location. Sadly they were all out, but I persisted in my quest for these leggings and found them at the Granville Street location.
I am so glad I found these little gems. They look like normal leggings in the outside, but they are fleece lined and just about the coziest things I have ever worn...with the exception of pajamas! I was a bit skeptical about the fact that they are one size fits all, but they feel amazing on and fit great! I bought two pairs for myself and a few extras as gifts! If you don't live in Vancouver, I learned from a fellow blogger and friend, Michaela, that Anthropologie has a similar type of leggings.
And do you know what pairs really well with fleece leggings? You guessed it, flannel shirts! I think that I must (not-so) subconsciously want to wear pajamas all the time, because my clothing choices lately are very jammie-esque! I really love flannel and plaid so its no wonder these shirts have been in constant rotation as of late. This is my new #momuniform!
What to Read
Okay, so I haven't technically read this yet, but I am going to make time this week to page through the latest issue of The Magnolia Journal. Did you know that Joanna Gaines has a quarterly publication? I have bought every issue so far and love reading these! In this on-line world we live in, I still enjoy reading an actual magazine over reading it on my ipad. Nothing beats the feel of the magazine and the gorgeous photography!
What To Watch
And while we are on the topic of my favorite designer, Joanna Gaines, I watched the first Fixer Upper episode of Season 5. It was a great premiere show, featuring the Hardy family and the "Lunar Landing" house. This house is a cute little cottage built in 1932 and has this amazing original front door with a moon carved into it.
The whole home is beautiful, of course, and I loved it all. Here is the mood board from the design process:
I think my favorite room was the bathroom. Look at this beautiful buffalo check wallpaper!
Well friends, that is it for this volume of "what I'm Loving Lately". As always, thanks for reading along!
